Permits in London, sorted.
From the city's own website, read 9 October 2026.
The City of London publishes a clear list on its before you apply for a building permit page. For kitchens and bathrooms:
- Permit needed: adding, removing or relocating a sink, tub, toilet or shower; a kitchen exhaust; interior alterations; a new or enlarged window or door.
- No permit: new cabinetry or cupboards; replacing a sink, tub, toilet or shower in the same location; replacing a window with the same size.
- Timing: complete small-scale residential applications are reviewed within 10 business days.
- Contact: 519-661-CITY (2489), or 311 within London. Applications go to building@london.ca.
Outside the city, in Middlesex County, building permits are a service of your local municipality rather than the County, as the County's who does what page sets out. That means Adelaide Metcalfe, Lucan Biddulph, Middlesex Centre, North Middlesex, Southwest Middlesex, Strathroy-Caradoc, Thames Centre or Newbury. Electrical work is separate everywhere in Ontario: the Electrical Safety Authority says almost all of it must be reported through a notification of work before it starts, by a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Our permit guide covers London in more detail.
