Permits in Cambridge, sorted.
From the city's own website, read 9 October 2026.
The City of Cambridge says you need a building permit for any structure over 10 square metres (108 sq. ft.) or any structure that includes plumbing. For renovations:
- Permit needed: interior structural alterations; adding or removing walls; plumbing or drains; new windows or doors, or bigger openings.
- No permit: kitchen or bathroom cupboards without plumbing; replacing windows of the same size; painting and decorating.
- Before work starts: a notice of commencement meeting with your assigned inspector, and inspections booked with at least 24 hours' notice.
- Contact: building@cambridge.ca or 519-623-1340. Applications go through the City Application Portal.
Cambridge's 2026 approved budget sets alterations and interior finishes at $0.50 per square foot, with a $143 minimum, plus a $25 zoning review fee for residential alterations. As the City puts it, the property owner must make sure a permit is approved before any work begins. Its three Heritage Conservation Districts, Blair Village, Dickson Hill and Main Street, have their own rules. Electrical work is separate everywhere in Ontario: the Electrical Safety Authority says almost all of it must be reported through a notification of work before it starts, by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
